Meaning
High-frequency circuit materials based on hydrocarbon resins and ceramic fillers provide stable performance for microwave and millimetre-wave applications. Rogers RO4000 series laminates are rigid circuit board materials designed to offer lower signal loss than standard epoxy-glass substrates. They feature a low dielectric constant and a low dissipation factor, which are essential for maintaining signal power in radio frequency designs.
These materials are processed using standard FR-4 fabrication techniques, allowing for cost-effective manufacturing of high-performance boards. The product line is the industry standard for cellular base stations, automotive radar, microwave backhaul and satellite communications.
Thermal Performance
Conductive heat moves through the hydrocarbon matrix more efficiently than through standard epoxy. Using Rogers RO4000 helps manage the temperature of power amplifiers by spreading heat away from the component pads. The material also exhibits a low coefficient of thermal expansion, matching the properties of copper.
This match prevents mechanical stress on the solder joints during rapid temperature changes.
Dielectric Stability
Properties of the resin remain consistent across a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. Within the Rogers RO4000 family, the dielectric constant varies very little, ensuring that the impedance of traces stays within tight tolerances. This predictability is necessary for phase-sensitive applications like phased-array antennas.
Moisture absorption is extremely low, preventing performance shifts in humid environments.
Processing Compatibility
Fabrication shops do not require specialized equipment to etch or drill these laminates. Rogers RO4000 materials can be used in hybrid stackups where high-frequency layers are bonded to standard FR-4 cores. This approach reduces the overall cost of the board while placing the high-performance material only where the RF signals travel.
Lead-free soldering processes are fully supported.
