Meaning
Clearance parameters define the physical margin between a conductive copper pad and the opening in the protective solder-resist layer of a circuit board. Establishing an appropriate solder mask expansion ensures that the solder-resist material does not encroach onto the copper landing pad and interfere with component soldering.
Fabrication Tolerance
Board manufacturers operate with finite registration accuracy. If the solder mask expansion is too small, registration shifts can cause the mask to partially cover the pads, reducing the solderable area.
Bridge Prevention
Fine-pitch components require narrow bridges of solder mask between adjacent pads to prevent bridging. When the solder mask expansion is set too large, these protective dams between pads can be completely removed during board fabrication. The absence of these dams allows molten solder to flow between pins, creating electrical shorts that are difficult to diagnose.
Assembly Yield
Optimizing the expansion value directly affects the volume of board failures during the automated assembly process. For high-density boards, a balanced expansion is calculated by comparing the registration tolerance of the fabricator against the pitch of the components. This calculation ensures that the maximum possible copper area is exposed while maintaining sufficient solder mask coverage between pins to prevent assembly defects.
