Meaning
Percentage values represent the remaining energy in a battery relative to its total capacity. State of charge provides the user and the system with an estimate of how much runtime is available before a recharge is necessary. It is the fuel gauge for electronic devices and electric vehicles.
Estimation Method
Coulomb counting tracks the amount of current flowing into and out of the cells over time. This approach to determining the state of charge is often combined with voltage look-up tables to correct for drift. Advanced algorithms use Kalman filters to predict the energy level based on historical usage patterns.
The sensor data is integrated over the entire discharge cycle to maintain an accurate tally.
Accuracy Variable
Temperature and aging change the internal resistance and effective capacity of the battery. If these factors are ignored, the reported state of charge will diverge from the actual energy remaining. Frequent full cycles help the management system recalibrate its internal models.
Operational Impact
Thresholds for power-saving modes depend on the reliability of the measurement. When the state of charge drops below ten percent, the system might throttle the processor or dim the display to extend the life of the remaining energy. Accurate reporting prevents the device from shutting down unexpectedly during a task.
