Meaning
Precision-machined metal collars designed to connect adjacent sections of hollow metal pipes ensure the low-loss transmission of high-frequency microwave and millimeter-wave signals. A waveguide flange provides a stable, repeatable mechanical interface that aligns the internal dimensions of the waveguides to prevent signal reflection. In high-frequency smart devices and test setups, these interfaces are used to link transceiver outputs to measurement equipment or antennas.
Mechanical Connection
Alignment pins and bolt circles are machined to sub-millimeter tolerances to ensure that the internal channels line up without offset. Misalignment at a waveguide flange interface introduces a step discontinuity, which causes signal reflection and increases the voltage standing wave ratio. Special attention is paid to the torque applied to the bolts during assembly to avoid distorting the metal faces.
Electromagnetic Seal
High-pressure contact between the mating surfaces prevents radio frequency leakage and minimizes insertion loss. Some waveguide flange designs incorporate a circular groove for a conductive gasket to improve the electrical seal. This feature is particularly important in high-power transmitters where leakage can cause electromagnetic interference with nearby low-power circuits.
Standardization Type
Standard geometries like the MIL-DTL-3922 specifications ensure intermateability across different suppliers and test equipment. Using standard flange types prevents costly custom adapters and guarantees consistent electrical performance during factory testing.
