Meaning
Wireless personal area network protocols designed for low-power operation transmit short bursts of data over short distances. The BLE protocol enables communication between small sensor nodes and mobile devices. It operates in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz spectrum.
The protocol stops applying where continuous high-bandwidth data streaming like high-definition video is required.
Energy Efficiency
Minimizing current draw during inactive states extends the battery life of small wearable devices. A typical BLE sensor remains in a deep sleep state for the majority of its operating life. It wakes up for a few milliseconds to transmit a data packet before returning to sleep.
Engineers measure this current profile using a high-precision digital multimeter during the system verification phase. Optimizing the advertising interval directly balances latency against the power budget of the product.
Connection Handshake
Establishing a secure communication link requires a structured exchange of packets. During a BLE connection sequence, the peripheral device advertises its presence on three dedicated channels. The central device detects these packets and initiates a pairing request.
This handshake establishes the encryption keys used to secure the subsequent data transmissions.
Enclosure Integration
Antenna detuning occurs when the wireless transceiver is mounted inside a protective housing. For a BLE product, the dielectric constant of the plastic enclosure shifts the resonant frequency of the trace antenna. Designers use a network analyzer to measure the return loss of the assembled device.
Tuning the matching network compensates for this shift.
