Meaning
Tracking databases trace the complete history of an electronic assembly from raw components to the finished product. Establishing serial number lineage allows manufacturers to link individual printed circuit boards with the sub-assemblies, modules and silicon chips mounted on them. This hierarchical record ensures that any field failure can be traced back to a specific batch of parts.
The database is updated in real time as each component is scanned and mounted.
Database Record
The system records the relationship between the main board’s serial number and the unique identifiers of all major parts. This data is stored in a secure manufacturing execution database that is accessible to quality control teams. The database must maintain these records for the entire lifecycle of the product.
Assembly Event
Automated scanners on the pick-and-place machines read the barcodes of component reels before they are loaded onto the feeders. As each component is placed, the software creates a digital link between the reel identifier and the board serial number. This process occurs during the initial assembly phase.
Failure Tracking
When a defective component is identified in the field, the lineage record is queried to locate all other boards that received parts from the same supplier lot. This capability enables targeted recalls instead of broad, expensive product withdrawals.
