Meaning
Compliance with Japanese radio law requires wireless equipment to obtain a specific certification demonstrating conformity to national technical standards. This approval process, historically governed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, is commonly called the MIC giteki certification. It applies to all equipment transmitting radio frequencies, including wireless networks, cellular terminals, and satellite communication transceivers.
The certification ensures that imported hardware does not interfere with domestic public safety and broadcasting networks.
Certification Process
Testing must be performed by a registered certification body that is recognized by the Japanese government. The procedure for MIC giteki involves submitting technical drawings, antenna patterns, and operational descriptions alongside physical test samples. These samples are tested for frequency tolerance, spurious emissions, and antenna power limits under extreme environmental conditions.
Once approved, the device is assigned a unique construction design certification number.
Marking Requirement
Every certified device must display the official conformity mark, which consists of a stylized logo followed by the assigned identification number. This marking is a legal requirement for operating the device within Japan, and utilizing uncertified transmitters can result in criminal penalties for the user. Modern regulations allow the use of electronic labels on integrated displays to accommodate smaller wearable and mobile electronics.
The label must be easily accessible in the device settings menu.
Market Enforcement
The regulator performs regular market audits by purchasing retail units to verify that they match the certified hardware. If a manufacturer alters the internal components of a certified module, they must apply for a formal amendment to prevent penalties.
